Hike Del Rey
6 Days / 5 Nights

A unique and challenging hike on the “Ruta Del Rey” along the River Savegre on trails through the rain cloud forest.

Day 1: San Gerardo de Dota

You will arrive by public bus to the picturesque community of San Gerardo de Dota, located in the cloud forest and the valley of the Savegre. This place is surrounded by old oak trees and legendary habitat of the quetzal, a bird in danger of extinction. Lodging in Sueños Del Bosque Lodge or similar (C)

Day 2: Immersion in the natural diversity of Costa Rica

We will begin with a hike through primary and secondary forests with diversity of flora and fauna, in the midst of thousand year old trees, bromeliads, ferns and giant trees. Enjoy the magnificent view of the mountains. Lunch will be in Cascadas Del Savegre and afterwards continue to La Piedra camp. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the community of Providencia de Dota. Lodging in tents in La Piedra. (D/R/A/C)

Distance: around 16 kilometers

Day 3: Descent to the forest

The hike this day will begin in early morning along an easy trail which will delight the hikers for its spectacular views of the highest peak Cerro de la Muerte. The trails will be characterized by descents (in some cases somewhat slippery) and grasslands. Halfway through the trip we will have a picnic lunch. The trip will conclude in the valley where Doña Xinia will be waiting with refreshments. Lodging in a simple hostel “La Chaqueta”. (D/A/C)

Day 4:  Adventure in River Savegre

The trip today is very picturesque with ascents and descents. You will hike through forests and prairies downhill until reaching the River Savegre. Around noon you will reach the house of Don Hernán and his family where we will have lunch and later take a swim in the river. With the help of a lifeline you will cross the Savegre River to continue the hike to San Isidro de Dota. You have the optional visit to a butterfly garden, frog breeding, or a nearby waterfall. Lodging in simple cabins Ranchos Tinamú. (D/R/A/C)

Day 5: Los Campesinos Reserve

The last day the trip will be on a gravel road that will take you to the village of Quebrada Arroyo. You will pass by Cerro Nara where you can observe the valley of the River Savegre and the Pacific coast. On arriving at Los Campesinos you will enjoy a delicious lunch. Later you will cross a hanging bridge that will require adrenaline to reach the natural pools where you can enjoy a much deserved swim. Lodging in Posada Rural Los Campesinos. (D/R/A/C)

Day 6: Return to Quepos

You will have breakfast in Los Campesinos and later you can choose an optional activity such as, rock climbing, horseback riding to the River Savegre, visiting the sugar mill, or swimming in the natural pools before leaving for Quepos/Manuel Antonio.

What to take?

Flashlight, cape, sufficient water or carbonated drink. If you want you can buy purifying tablets for water so as not to carry bottles along the way, energy bars, walking stick, rain proof knapsack to keep clothing in case of rain. We recommend fast drying clothing, a light jacket as the climate in the morning and evening is cool, sunblock and lip block, adequate walking shoes for hiking or rubber boots (the boots are recommended only if you are accustomed to using them), sandals are recommended and swimming suit for the natural pools and medicine for personal use.
